How Long Should I Meditate?

Recommended duration of meditation depending on the goal

In this section we discuss the duration of each goal and what is appropriate for you. It may vary depending on the person and their state of health. However, we will only have a broader discussion.

For Beginners

If you are a beginner and have just learned about meditation from a friend or the internet and want to start practicing now. First, find a good meditation teacher who can guide you. A teacher is very important in this process. You may think you can do it through your own exploration, but I highly recommend having a good teacher to show you the way. There are many ways, but this is not the article where I will go into the methods of meditation practice. I have written about that in other articles that you can check out.

So if you want to start yourself, a simple 5 to 10 minutes a day is enough. This is how you get into the habit of practicing. Ideally, you should be guided by a teacher to understand what the right approach is. And what is the wrong approach?

After some time, when you feel comfortable with the process, you can do further research. The possibilities are limitless, the benefits are limitless. A five to ten minute meditation is just the first step on this path. If you’d like to know more about the benefits of meditation, I have also written an article about it, which you can read here. I have made the article available below. I have also written a complete guide to meditation for beginners. You can also read this article to find out more.

Now let us explore further and determine the meditation duration based on the above goals. Please note that this article is a beginner-friendly article. If you are a regular meditator, you should be patient. At the end of the article, we will discuss the ideal time for a regular, dedicated practitioner with work and family commitments.

To Reduce Stress

A daily practice of 20 minutes a day would be a good starting point to achieve better stress reduction results. Try not to push yourself too hard, be kind to yourself, it’s a practice, there will be ups and downs. You are practicing every day, that is already a great success.

Deep Concentration and Productivity

For students, 30 minutes of practice is a good start. I would like to emphasize again that you should not put too much pressure on yourself, because you are at the beginning and the body needs time to get used to the new routine, be gentle and kind to your ups and downs.

For Spiritual Growth and Inner Peace

This is an important point that I would like to elaborate on. This is the point where the beginner’s state becomes too fuzzy. If your goal is to elevate yourself spiritually and enjoy all the benefits mentioned above, you need to start with a good teacher. Because a good practice and a good technique are important so that the foundation is solid and helps you achieve your goals.

Although the word “goal” is not appropriate in this context. For those who want to gain knowledge, I highly recommend starting with a retreat with an authentic source. If you want to learn more about this, read my article about it.

Advanced practitioners

Here begins the part for advanced practitioners or those who are dedicated to the process.

Congratulations! For all the effort you have put in. You have made it a habit to practice every day. I admire you because it is a rare phenomenon to meet a person like you. I appreciate your path. Below I have described your journey and the duration of practice.

Duration of Mediation for Dedicated Practitioners with Profession and Responsibility:

Let us cover the basics first, because this part of this article might be interesting for beginners as well.

A Retreat

No one goes to a retreat unless they have been on the path for a long time, looking for a solution to their everyday problems and wanting a final solution, wanting to know why there is suffering, why they have to face it, and how to overcome it.

A retreat allows them to uncover this process. I recommend anyone who is healthy and fit to attend a retreat to understand the practice of meditation. Many retreats are free to attend. And a meditation retreat should be free. Because it is a service to humanity.

Duration

Now let us focus on the main topic of this article, duration. For a dedicated practitioner, there is no time limit. The basic goal is to sit for 2 hours a day. 1 hour in the morning and 1 hour in the evening. And if you can and have more time, do more sitting meditations.

Normally a person can meditate 10-11 hours a day in retreats. At home this is not possible because you have to work, so it is recommended that you stick to 2 hours a day. On vacation you can do more sitting meditations, you can do 4 hours per day if you have enough time, with a short break after 1 hour per session.

If you meditate for a long time in retreats and at home, you will eventually understand that meditation does not require you to sit all the time. You can also practice it while doing something else, e.g. cooking, working, washing. Meditation can be done all the time. It is a practice that can be applied to anything.

If you understand where your attention is focused, you can always bring it back to your object. The benefits are endless. Life changes when you practice it for years. Pain no longer bothers us. Sadness does not affect us. There are no mood swings. Life is a delight and you just accept it and do what needs to be done until your last breath.

A good intention with good practice makes your gold shine from within, you know you are on the right path, and no one can give you more gold. It is a blessing. The mind is merely a pattern of habits you have developed over the years of your journey. So be patient and you will overcome everything.

Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche on Meditation Duration

Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche is a meditation teacher. In this video, he talks about how to approach the duration of meditation practice using the experience of his father’s wisdom.

Gentle Warning from Personal Experience:

I would like to give you a warning along the way: Even if the practice is fantastic, do not neglect your health. The body is susceptible to disease and all the other factors of a normal life. Be careful and take care of yourself so that you can practice until the final steps are completed.

Conclusion: How Long Should I Meditate?

For a beginner, a meditation duration of 5 to 10 minutes is ideal for starting the practice. For an intermediate practitioner, a meditation duration of 45 minutes is ideal, and for an advanced practitioner with domestic commitments, 2 hours a day is the ideal meditation duration. And 3-4 hours of meditation on weekends would be a bonus. A longer practice should only be done after a retreat under the guidance of a teacher. It is strongly recommended that a serious practitioner seek out a teacher first.
